The evolution on the easel continues, and it’s clear that my regular drawing helps when I go to pick up the brush.
For a long time, I really felt a large divide between my drawing and painting. They always seemed like distinct paths of creating. However, I’m beginning to pull them a little closer together by using view my drawings as starting places for paintings.
I’ve been working hard at putting in a solid block of time every morning with my sketchbooks. The results can vary, but they are becoming increasingly consistent. I’m happy to see improvement there, but I’m also collecting a catalog of ideas to pull from when I sit down at my easel. The reality is that the more I buckle down to just working regularly the better things seem to turn out. Funny how that happens.
Here’s a drawing from February. It’s one of my recent favourites. I like the mix of colours and sense of action.

And below, this is the painting I just finished. There are some key differences, but the painting captures a lot of the same energy. It’s a small work, but I feel proud of how it turned out.
